‘Modak’ is a very popular sweet made in Maharashtra at the time of auspicious festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. The traditional modaks are steamed dumplings made with rice flour, jaggery and grated coconut. They are super delicious and yummy and is the widespread bhog prasad to be offered to Lord Ganeshaa. The modaks prepared by me are made with dates, apricots, almonds and oats. They are filled with health and lots of energy. Some people may not find it super yummy to eat as they have dates and apricots but this is really a great sweet treat for diabetics/diabetes patients.
Dried apricots: 7-8 nos.
Seedless dates: 10-12nos.
Chopped almonds: 1/2 cup
Milk powder: 2 tbsp
Rolled oats: 2 cups
Clarified butter/Desi ghee: 1 tsp
Water: 1/2 cup
1. Chop dates and apricots and boil them for 4-5 minutes.
2. Cool them thoroughly and grind them to a fine paste.
3. Take a wok and heat it.
4. Sauté the rolled oats for few minutes to take out their rawness.
5. Add the milk powder to the oats and sauté for 30 seconds and continuously stir it so that the milk powder should not get burnt off.
6. Turn off the gas flame and add chopped almonds to it.
7. To the sautéed oats add the pureed dates and apricots. Add ghee and stir continuously until it leaves sides.
8. Mix well and let it cool down.
9. Take a modak mould, grease it and put some mixture into the mould.
10. Take out the modaks from the mould and offer to Lord Ganeshaa.
